WE Vote. WE Rise!

WE Vote. WE Rise!

The WE Vote. WE Rise! (WVWR) is Women Engaged’s signature voter empowerment and education program. Debuted in October of 2014 in the Atlanta neighborhood of Capitol View Manor, our coFounders Malika and Margaret set forth from Malika’s dining room table to organize the community and build civic power and participation on the issues that matter most to us, using integrated voter engagement (IVE) strategy.

IVE empowers community members to take action and build leadership on the issues that matter most. Rooted in grassroots strategies, IVE builds relationships and nurtures individuals into trusted advocates, leaders, and organizers who mobilize their communities, starting at the ballot box and beyond.

Since then, under Malika’s leadership and the efforts of her team WVWR has grown wider across the state of Georgia, and deeper in our relationships with community members. WVWR is a year-round program conducting on average three to five campaigns per year, hiring canvassers directly from the neighborhoods served for issue and policy advocacy campaigns, voter registration and activations, and nonpartisan get-out-the-vote (GOTV) campaigns for general and runoff elections.

We use the Voter Activation Network database or VAN and invest in new technologies to stay engaged with recently contacted voters. Base-building with this new set of supporters through our year-round civic engagement efforts includes response calls, door-to-door conversations, phone banking, social media networking and other experimental ways to learn more about the issues that our set of voters deem important, is building voting power and helping to create an equitable Georgia.

Issue and Policy Advocacy

Founded in 2014, Women Engaged works at the local, state, and national levels to ensure communities have a real voice in the policies that shape their lives. We provide education and opportunities that help people advocate directly with their elected officials and participate meaningfully in the democratic process. Over the years, we have hosted candidate forums in East Point, College Park, and Atlanta, creating spaces where residents can engage directly with those seeking public office.

Each year, Women Engaged plays an active role in Georgia’s legislative process by challenging harmful policies and advancing solutions that improve our quality of life. We helped co-create the Reproductive Freedom Act to protect abortion access in state law and expand access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare across Georgia.

Since 2021, we have also advocated for the CROWN Act and for Reparations at the local, state, and national levels, using a reproductive justice lens to show how these issues affect people’s dignity, health, and economic security.

In alternating years, we lead statewide issue campaigns to better understand what motivates Georgians to take action and what they want from their elected leaders. We share this information with policymakers as a tool for accountability. Year after year, nearly 85% of people we engage say that increasing access to healthcare must be a top priority in our state.

At the heart of our work is closing the gap between communities and decision-makers. Through our Virtual Soapbox, we provide an accessible platform where community members and partner organizations can speak directly to the press and public officials—making sure real stories and lived experiences drive public conversation and policy change.

Community Engagement & Voter Registration

Since the historic case of Shelby v. Holder, which gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1964, there have been measures to reduce our access to the ballot box. However, we each can do our part to ensure that we hold our elected officials accountable, by exercising our right to vote for the issues that matter most to you and our communities.

Every summer since our founding, we engaged in a 11-15 week campaign conducting on the ground, non-partisan, voter registration and voter education at hot spots across the areas that we serve with our canvassers and community leaders. We frequent MARTA stations, barbershops, grocery stores, festivals, farmers’ markets and more. Do you reside in Georgia? Have you moved or changed your name recently? Have you voted in the last two elections in your area? You can now update your voter registration online!

Get Out the Vote

Did you know there is at least one election in your community every year? Many Georgians are left unaware of when and where to vote because of how our election systems operate. With most campaign outreach driven by money and focused on high-profile races, too many people are overlooked in critical local and down-ballot elections—leaving their voices unheard.

Through our When We Vote, We Win (WVWR) program, Women Engaged leads nonpartisan Get Out the Vote (GOTV) campaigns ahead of each election. We hire canvassers and mobilize volunteers to engage communities over a four- to seven-week period, making sure voters have the clear, accurate information they need to participate. This includes helping people find their polling location, access sample ballots, and get answers to common voting questions.

As Election Day approaches, we support voters in creating a voting plan because having a plan makes you more likely to vote. We also help connect people to practical resources, such as transportation or childcare, to remove barriers to participation.

Our outreach uses a mix of trusted, people-centered tactics, including door knocking, phone banking, text messaging, social media, and relational organizing. In every conversation, we also listen—asking voters what issues matter most to them and what motivates them to show up at the polls. This ensures our GOTV work not only increases turnout, but also centers the real concerns of Georgia’s communities.
